Description:
This is a timely and comparative assessment of initiatives to promote renewable electricity sources (RES) in eight European countries. Carried out by the ProSus research programme at the University of Oslo in cooperation with leading research institutions in each country, the study focuses on the promotional schemes used to foster RES in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden. The study is unique in that it monitors progress on implementing the EU RES Directive in relation to the impact of the `dominant energy systems' in each country. Employing the notions of `path dependency/path creation', the analysis demonstrates that crucial lessons for achieving RES targets are to be found in the contextual conditions of national and regional settings; conditions that qualify the effects of more general, market-oriented schemes. The conclusions reached are of direct relevance for the ongoing debate as to the most effective policy instruments for achieving sustainable energy and climate policies in Europe. Promoting Sustainable Electricity in Europe will be of interest to academics and researchers involved in environmental management, energy studies, technology and sustainable development. Furthermore it will be of interest to policymakers and bureaucrats both at the EU level and among EU/EEA member states concerned with climate change, renewable energy and sustainable development at large. The book should also be of relevance for business organizations and NGOs concerned with the promotion of sustainable electricity.

Description:
The reign of Henry VIII saw a renascent militarism encapture England. James Raymond traces the development of Henry's military establishment within the context of the wider European military revolution. Making use of extensive new research into the military literature of the mid-Tudor period, 'Henry VIII's Military Revolution' is able to firmly root the military theories of the time within the solid realities of Henry's army. Raymond pays particular attention to the rise of professionalism and the adaptation of the English army to new technologies and ideas. In this vein Raymond explores the career of Henry's first professional artillaryman for the first time, Sir Christopher Morris. In so doing he casts a striking new light on our understanding of the development of artillery not only in England, but also in Europe as a whole. About the Author James Raymond has held the positions of Teaching Fellow at King's College London and the Joint Services Command & Staff College and has taught at the University of Exeter.

Description:
In the year 2043, an American-led Alliance has been at war with Ngumi, a third-world confederation, for eight years, due largely to the Alliance's refusal to share new technology. Aside from a few thermonuclear strikes, most of the fighting, at least on the Alliance's side, has been carried out by 'soldierboys,' killing machines run under remote control by brain-jacked 'mechanics,' many of them draftees like physicist Julian Class. Meanwhile, in orbit around Jupiter, humanity's most ambitious scientific experiment ever, the Jupiter Project, is coming to fruition. But Julian's lover and former adviser, Amelia Harding, discovers that potentially the Project could destroy not just our solar system but the entire universe, in a reprise of the Big Bang. When Amelia and Julian try to stop the Project, their way is blocked by the Hammer of God, an influential Christian cult dedicated to bringing about the Endtime. As always, Haldeman, a Vietnam vet, writes with intelligence and power about the horrors of war, and about humanity's seeming inability to overcome its violent tendencies. Julian Class, like so many of Haldeman's protagonists, is an essentially good man who, forced by the military to become a killer, has been driven nearly to suicide by guilt. His story packs an enormous emotional punch.

Description:
St. Martha\'s College, Cambridge, had been staggering along on a shoestring for decades. Then alumna Alice Toon leaves her old school a huge fortune. The dons immediately fall to fighting over the spoils. The Virgins, led by Dame Maid Theodosia Buckbarrow, believe the bequests should be spent on scholarships. The Dykes, fewer in number but better street fighters, want to raise a center for Gender and Ethnic Studies. The Old Women (mostly men) dream of fine vintages to be laid down in a decent new wine cellar. Impasse! They\'ve reckoned without the Bursar, Jack Troutbeck. She elects to inflitrate this maelstrom of politics with her own agent, Robert Amiss, a former civil servant with a talent for sorting things out. No sooner does he arrive on the scene where the Virgins are getting the upper hand than Dame Maud is murdered, leading into what Mike Ripley on The Daily Telegraph described as: "An acidly funny romp... Superbly bitchy on the none-too-fragrant groves of academe"

Description:
The Outfit was organized crime with a capital O. They were big. They were bad. They were brutal. And no crook ever crossed them and lived to enjoy it. Except Parker. So they wanted Parked dead, and a hitman proved they meant business. Too bad for the Outfit he missed. Because Parker planned to get even. Dead even. Ripping off the Outfit was the easy part of Parker's game. Going one-on-one with Bronson, the Outfit's Big Boss, was the hard part. Hard for anyone but Parker -because the entire underworld knew it was written in blood: whatever Parked did, he did deadly.
